Stockpiled Grazing

October 11th, 2011

Just while Shayne is putting the finishing touches on his weaning video, just had to share a short video clip I shot. Just after weaning, I was in one of the back pastures setting up temporary fence to where we were going to move the ewes to. I was so amazed at the perfect visual example of why we manage our grazing so intensely. Have a look…

When we carefully control our grazing during the growing season, we can set up our pastures to grow long into the fall. This video was taken around mid-Sept. Even though we are now into Oct, we still have green grass in our pastures. By having the grass grow later in the season, it can maintain its quality for longer, and we have a great quantity. This allows us to graze our sheep right into winter, until the snow becomes to deep for them to forage.

If you ever have any grazing questions, feel free to contact us. We would love to talk grass with you!
